Sally’s Famous Apple Crumb Pie
Ingredients
Crust
- 1 cup King Arthur Flour organic all-purpose
- 1/4 tsp. salt
- 1/2 cup chilled butter (or shortening)
- 1-3 Tbsp. ice water (you'll need enough to hold it together but the less water the flakier the crust)
Apple filling
- 8 cups Apples (pared, cored, and thinly sliced) 1) Paula reds or 2) Cortlands or 3) MacIntosh
- 3/4 cup Granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup King Arthur organic all-purpose flour
- up to 1 tsp. cinnamon
- up to 1/4 tsp. nutmeg (I leave this out but you can add according to taste)
Crumb Topping
- 1 cup King Arthur organic all-purpose flour
- 1 stick (1/2 cup) Butter (chilled)
- 1/2 cup Light brown sugar
Instructions
Crust

Crust: mix the salt and flour together

cut up the stick of chilled butter into small pieces and add to flour

Blend together using a pastry blender

Start adding ice water one Tbsp. at a time until the dough starts holding together

Roll out on wooden cutting board or on granite counter until it is large enough to cover the bottom of a pie pan and up the sides with enough to make an edge at the top of the sides.
Apple filling

Mix apples, sugar, and cinnamon together (let rest a few minutes)

Put apple filling into pie crust
Crumb Topping

Mix topping ingredients together (it will be lumpy)

Sprinkle over top of the apple filling
Bake

Pre-heat oven to 350°

Put pie on rack in middle of oven placing a baking sheet on rack underneath to catch the drips

Bake for approximately 1 hour (*hint: it is done when it is dripping)
